Christopher, vijftien jaar oud, heeft een buitengewoon brein - uitzonderlijk in wiskunde en slecht toegerust om het dagelijks leven te interpreteren. Wanneer hij wordt verdacht van het vermoorden van de hond Wellington van mevrouw Shears, legt hij elk feit over de gebeurtenis vast in het boek dat hij schrijft om het mysterie van de moord op te lossen. Maar zijn speurwerk, verboden door zijn vader, neemt hem mee op een angstaanjagende reis die zijn wereld op zijn kop zet.
