In 1964 zal Richard Burton, pas getrouwd met Elizabeth Taylor, de titelrol spelen in een experimentele nieuwe Broadway-productie van Hamlet onder de veeleisende leiding van Sir John Gielgud. Maar naarmate de repetities vorderen, komen twee theatertijdperken met elkaar in botsing en dreigt de samenwerking tussen acteur en regisseur al snel te ontrafelen.
