In 1980 ontmoetten twee buitenstaanders uit Cork, Cathal Coughlan en Sean O'Hagan, elkaar op een oudejaarsfeest. Door de band via muziek ontstond er een partnerschap voor vriendschap en songwriting; de band die ze vormden, Microdisney, was een van de beste bands uit de jaren tachtig die je waarschijnlijk nog nooit hebt gehoord. Door de verbluffende melodieuze arrangementen van Sean te mixen met de poëtische, boze teksten van Cathal, namen ze drie briljante lp's op, kregen ze kritische bewondering en een obsessieve cultstatus. Maar een hitsingle ontging hen, net als hoorspel en de verkoop van lp's. In 1988, gefrustreerd door hun gebrek aan vooruitgang, crashte de band en verbrandde ze, een spoor van bitterheid en verbroken vriendschappen achterlatend.
